Casper to celebrate 1965 GHO win

Billy Casper will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his Greater Hartford Open win with a visit to Wintonbury Hills.

Bloomfield, Conn. -- Billy Casper will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his 1965 Greater Hartford Open victory with a visit to Wintonbury Hills Golf Course June 8.

The visit by Casper -- a winner of three major championships, who ranks sixth all-time with 51 PGA Tour wins -- to Connecticut's most highly-rated public course will be highlighted by numerous events that are free and open to the public.

Starting a 1:30 p.m., Casper will be available for autographs and photos, followed by a clinic and skills exhibition at the driving range.

"I'm looking forward to visiting the Hartford area, where I have so many great memories," says Casper. "The people in the community have treated me very well over the years and it will be good to see Wintonbury Hills, a course that I've heard wonderful things about."

Casper's 1965 victory came on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Johnny Pott. He also captured the title in 1963, 1968 and 1973, making him the winningest player in event's 54-year history. His golf course management firm, Billy Casper Golf, has operated Wintonbury Hills since fall 2003.

The first and only course in New England designed by Pete Dye, Wintonbury Hills is located only 15 minutes from Hartford in the heart of Connecticut's hill country. Most recently the municipally-owned course was named to the "Zagat Survey 2005: America's Top Golf Courses".

Wintonbury Hills is a par-70, 18 hole championship layout. The course offers a blend of links style holes and a forested look that typifies golf in the Northeast.
