Captiva Island Course gets Supreme Turf

Sea Isle Supreme takes root at Captiva Island Golf Club. The semidwarf seashore paspalum was installed at the redesigned Captiva Island Golf Club, a nine-hole, par-27 course in Athens, Ga.

For the wall-to-wall installation, more than 880,000 square feet of Sea Isle Supreme turf was laid, and approximately 1,500 bushels of turf sprigs were used for the greens.

As one of Southwest Florida’s only Gulf-front golf courses, Captiva Island Golf Club features water views from nearly every hole. This ocean proximity and the environmental conditions that come with it were major concerns when selecting the turf for the course. The turf must endure high chloride and sodium levels, as well as irrigation with alternate water sources. Sea Isle Supreme was also chosen for its ability to accommodate a wide range of mowing heights.

“I’ve been very impressed with Sea Isle Supreme, even through some tough installation conditions,” says Captiva Island golf superintendent Josh Levitre. “It grew on our course in the middle of winter and endured heavy storms that washed up five inches of beach sand. It’s proven to be an extremely resilient grass that also offers excellent aesthetics and playabilitiy.”

Developed by Ron Duncan, Ph.D., former professor of Crop and Soil Sciences at the University of Georgia, USA, Sea Isle Supreme can be irrigated using alternate water sources including salt water and waste water. This cutting-edge semi-dwarf seashore paspalum variety is the most salt tolerant of the other commercially grown paspalums. It’s an ideal choice for golf course greens, fairways, tees and roughs. Sea Isle Supreme is available through the following farms within the Sea Isle Supreme Growers Association: Diamond Turf, Phillip Jennings Turf, Pike Creek Turf, SMR Farms, and South Florida Grassing.
