GCI’s Bruce Williams spent a day at an Illinois course learning about pollinators and a bee enhancement program.

GCI senior contributing editor Bruce Williams returned to the Chicago area Sept. 20 to tour the grounds of Cantigny Golf Club and learn more about the Feed a Bee initiative.

Cantigny is a 500-acre property in Wheaton, Ill., managed by director of agronomy Scott Witte and his crew. Witte, a self-taught beekeeper, has worked at Cantigny for 21 years and his efforts have increased pollination throughout the grounds.

The tour included presentations about bees and butterflies, glimpses at habitats designed to promote pollination, an introduction to sensor technology that record hive activity and send data to a larger network, and samples of food served with harvested honey.

Feed a Bee is an initiative of Bayer Bee Care, and Cantigny is an official partner of the initiative. Through the help of 500,000 people and 100 organizations, the initiative has planted more than 150 million flowers since its inception.

A golf outing was held at Cantigny Sept. 21 with half of all entry fees benefiting pollinator and agriculture education at the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal, Ill.
