Camp Creek Golf Club - the Tom Fazio design developed by St. Joe and located along Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast - was selected by the United States Golf Association (“USGA”) and Florida State Golf Association (“FSGA”) to host a sectional qualifier July 30-31 for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship.
The USGA’s oldest championship, the U.S. Amateur was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA. The top finishers will receive invitations to play in the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship held Aug.18-24 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Camp Creek served as the venue for a sectional qualifier in 2006 and a U.S. Open Qualifier in 2007.
“We are honored to once again host this prominent and important event for the USGA,” says Will Hopkins, general manager at Camp Creek. “We are ecstatic to have received such a positive response from the USGA and FSGA and we believe Camp Creek serves as an excellent proving ground for players attempting to gain entry into the U.S Amateur Championship.”
Qualified entrants will play from Camp Creek’s championship tees, which measure 7,159 and feature one of Florida’s highest slope ratings, at 152. The course’s final three holes – a 215-yard par-3, a 559-yard par-5 and a 453-yard par-4 – present one of the most difficult finishing stretches in the state.
The entry deadline for this event will be announced at a later date and forms will be available online at www.usga.org. Only non-professional golfers with a USGA Handicap Index of 2.4 or below are eligible to enter any of the U.S Amateur Qualifiers. For more information, visit www.usga.org or www.usamateur.org.
