Far Hills, N.J. – Broadmoor Golf Club, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, the United States Golf Association announced. The championship is scheduled July 3 through 6. It will be the fifth USGA championship at the Broadmoor Golf Club.

The Broadmoor Golf Club has been named the site of the 2008 U.S. Senior Open.

Donald Ross designed the original 18-hole course in 1918. In 1958, Robert Trent Jones Sr. completed the design for another nine holes and finished a second 18-hole course incorporating the Ross holes in 1965. The final layout has resulted in a combination of Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones designs on each course.

The most recent USGA championship at Broadmoor Golf Club was the U.S. Women’s Open in 1995, won by Annika Sorenstam. Juli Inkster won the U.S. Women’s Amateur there in 1982. The club also has hosted the 1959 and 1967 U.S. Amateur, won by Jack Nicklaus and Bob Dickson, respectively. In 1962, the United States won the Curtis Cup Match at Broadmoor Golf Club.

The club also has hosted five NCAA Men’s Golf Championships and seven Trans-Mississippi Championships. In addition, the Western Amateur was played at Broadmoor Golf Club in 1935 and 1941 as well as the 1998 PGA Cup Matches and the World Seniors Golf Tournament from 1960 to 2001.

“The Broadmoor Golf Club is proud to have been awarded the 2008 U.S. Senior Open,” says Russ Miller, director of golf. “We are ecstatic to continue our long relationship with the USGA while bringing another national championship to the golf community in Colorado. It promises to be a truly special event.”

According to Fred Dickman, CGCS at Broadmoor, the course is going through some major changes.

“The East course is currently undergoing a major restoration project including the rebuilding of all the course bunkers and restoring original bunkers that had been lost over the years,” he says. “Several back tees are being constructed that will add length and strategy.”

Dickman says original green perimeters also are being reclaimed. Ron Forse with Forse Design is the golf course architect and while Landscapes Unlimited, along with the Broadmoor golf course maintenance staff, is performing the work.

Prior to 2008, the U.S. Senior Open will be played July 28 through 31, 2005, at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio; July 6 through 9, 2006, at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.; and July 5 through 8, 2007, at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
