Born on May 9, 1935, in Manchester, England, Malcolm was the son of Betty and Albert Stack. An adventurer, he left England at age 16 and joined the Canadian Navy, after which he immigrated to the United States.
A successful businessman, Malcolm started Bell Laboratories in 1974 and grew the business, which employs more than 300 people, into a leader in the pest control industry. He was highly regarded among his peers and was the recipient of numerous awards. His professional organization, UPFDA (United Producers, Formulators & Distributors Association), grants the annual Malcolm Stack Integrity Award.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Debra (Seymour) Stack; daughters, Linda (John) Stack Hughes, Cathy (Jim Wilson) Thompson and Anne (Tim) Connor; seven grandchildren, Christie and Lindsay Hughes, Jillian and Riley Thompson, and Calvin, Zoe and Kate Connor; the mother of his children, Joan Stack; a sister, Jean (Bill) Ward of England; a brother, Roy (Jean) Stack of Canada; and the employees of Bell Laboratories, whom he cared for very much.
In lieu of flowers, consider that Malcolm believed that flowers belonged in the soil and not in vases. Please plant a flower, bush or tree in his memory this spring. If you would like to make a donation, please do so to the Creating Hope Fund at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at UW-Madison or to the Evans Scholars Foundation, a group he supported annually. A celebration of Malcolm's life will be held at his beloved Ridge Run Farm on Saturday, May 13, 2006, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. A collection of photos, suggested memorials, directions to Ridge Run Farm and an e-mail link to the family can be found at: www.maloncourse.com.
