Schmidt obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in agronomy from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He has served as a professor at Virginia Polytechnic and State University in the department of crop and soil environmental science in Blacksburg, Va., and holds the highest distinction of professor emeritus.
