Throughout 2007, Audubon International invited golfers and golf courses in the United States, Canada and around the world to take part in the Audubon Green Golfer Challenge. The challenge was simple—have golfers pledge to become an Audubon Green Golfer by taking steps to support environmental stewardship while playing the game.
The pledges from participating golf courses were collected and counted by Audubon International with ongoing totals posted online. Prizes were awarded to golf courses with the most golfers signed up by the November 15, 2007 deadline. Items include signed golf art prints, Audubon International apparel, gift certifications from Coveside Conservation Products, and free memberships in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.
Tallying over 2,500 individual pledges from 54 golf course spread around the world, a green dialogue between golfers and golf course management has been established. The golf courses with the most pledges are:
- The National Service Resort and Country Club (Singapore)
- Bethpage State Park (NY)
- The Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club (Philippines)
- Rockland Country Club (NY)
- RiverBend Golf Club (Canada)
- Pecan Hollow Golf Course (TX)
- Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club (FL)
- Stone Tree Golf and Fitness Club (Canada)
- WinStar Golf Course (OK)
Golfers who took the Green Golfer Pledge during 2007 are eligible also for a random drawing of prizes to be drawn in early 2008. Prizes for golfers include gear from TaylorMade-addidas as well as tickets to the 2008 U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif.
