The Atlantic City Country Club sits on 170 acres in Northfield, N.J., just minutes from Atlantic City. Founded in 1897, the course has had tremendous significance in the history of the game. The term “birdie” was first coined on the course in 1903, and the term “eagle” shortly after.

Over the course of history many of the nation’s top golfers played at the club including notables Bob Hope and Arnold Palmer (played while a Coast Guard Seaman stationed in Cape May, NJ).

The original course layout hosted the 1901 U.S. Amateur and has played host to six U.S. Women’s Opens won by Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1948, Carol Manna in 1965 and Sandra Palmer in 1975 with Nancy Lopez placing second as an amateur.

In October 1998, the course was completely renovated by acclaimed course architect Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Designs, Inc. who made several changes to the course. The second hole was shortened, the fifth lengthened to the former second green site, the 10th and 11th holes were combined into a par-five hole into the wind, and the former 12th hole extended by some 70 yards to make it a killer par four. The renovation was completed in the spring of 2000.

The most radical change was the new 14th and 15th holes. A new section of tidal marsh was dug into the original 15th hole to create a more daunting short par-4 from a peninsula tee, followed by a difficult par-3 playing back into the southeast wind; while the earth removed from the marsh was redistributed to raise all of the coastal holes above flood levels. Finally, the 18th hole was shortened northward, turning a par-5 with a lay-up second shot into the strong par-4 back into the wind.

Tom Doak did an amazing job of restoring the golf course back to its early 1900’s look. The new holes are very esthetically pleasing as well as challenging; yet fun for all skill levels.

Recognition for the ACCC has been consistently positive. In 2006, Golf Week Magazine named the club one of the Top 100 Classic Golf Courses in the country and the number one Public/Daily Fee golf course in the state of New Jersey. In 2004, the National Golf Course Owners Association named the ACCC New Jersey’s Best Private Course. In 2003, Golf Magazine recognized the ACCC one of the top five courses in New Jersey.
