The American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) welcomed six new associate members to its ranks at the group’s recent 61st Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Ga.
The election of John Cope (North Palm Beach, Fla.), Jim Engh (Castle Rock, Colo.), Ted Robinson, Jr. (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Phil Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Bryce Swanson (Montclair, N.J.) and Ken Williams (Toledo, Ohio) brings ASGCA membership to 182.
John Cope - Cope is senior design associate with Nicklaus Design of North Palm Beach, Fla. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University. His courses include: The Peninsula, Rehoboth Beach, Del.; St. James Plantation – The Reserve, Southport, N.C.; and The Palisades, Charlotte, N.C.
Jim Engh - Engh is president of James J. Engh Golf Design Group in Castle Rock, Colo. He earned his landscape architecture degree from Colorado State University. His courses include: The Sanctuary, Sedalia, Colo.; the Club at Black Rock, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; and The Club at Pradera, Parker, Colo.
Ted Robinson, Jr. - Robinson is principal of Robinson Golf, Inc. of Laguna Beach, Calif. He holds both a Bachelor's degree and an MBA from University of Southern California. His courses include: Arrowood Golf Course, Oceanside, Calif.; Robinson Ranch - Valley Course, Santa Clarita, Calif; and Marriott Los Suenos Golf Resort, Costa Rica.
Phil Smith - Smith is senior design associate with Weiskopf Designs of Scottsdale, Ariz. He holds his landscape architecture degree from Kansas State University. His courses include: TPC at Craig Ranch, McKinney, Texas; Silverleaf, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Seven Canyons, Sedona Ariz.
Bryce Swanson - Swanson is senior designer with Rees Jones, Inc. of Montclair, N.J. He is a graduate of the landscape architecture program at Iowa State University. His courses include: Coyote Crossing Golf Course, West Lafayette, Ind.; Daniel Island Club – Ralston Creek Course, Charleston, S.C.; and a remodel of Atlanta Athletic Club – Riverside Course, Duluth, Ga.
Ken Williams - Williams is an architect with Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates in Toledo, Ohio. He earned his landscape architecture degree from University of Florida and his MBA from University of Toledo. His courses include: Bolingbrook Golf Club, Bolingbrook, Ill.; Lyon Oaks Golf Course, Wixom, Mich.; and Miami Beach Golf Club, Miami Beach, Fla.
Candidates for Associate Membership in ASGCA complete a rigorous, multi-phase application process that includes peer review of four completed courses, discussions with project owners and a personal interview to assess the candidate’s professional capabilities. This process typically takes two years for an applicant to complete.
