Eighteen holes of golf have opened for play at K. Hovnanian's Four SeasonsĀ® at Rancho del Lago, an active adult community located near Tucson in Vail, Ariz.
The 37,000-square-foot waterless green has 18 putting holes, including a designated green with two holes exclusively for chipping. These holes are complemented by manicured sand traps.
The Four Seasons golf feature was the brainchild of Toby Bourguet, president of Tucson Turf Waterless Lawns, a locally owned and family operated company.
"The Four Seasons putting green is more than three times larger than the biggest we can identify in the state of Arizona," Bourguet said. "Designing and building it was an incredible challenge. Each phase was a process in itself. Now that it's finished, we're very proud of this landmark putting green."
The K. Hovnanian and Tucson Turf team selected the turf. All three greens are wrapped by plush fringe turf that uses a dual color blade system to give them a freshly mowed appearance.
"We had many options," Bourguet said. "The turf we chose is American made and the same surface as the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. I figured if it was good enough for Jerry Jones, it would work well for us."
Bourguet adds that turf products are very eco-friendly.
"This turf saves nearly one million gallons of water a year compared to what is required to maintain an acre of grass in the desert," he says. "We save an astronomical amount of water, gas and oil. Artificial turf actually drains better than real grass. Our products work well in Tucson and have built-in UV protection that holds up well in the sun."
In addition to the Four Seasons putting green, the Rancho del Lago master plan includes an 18-hole golf course, nine lakes and the del Lago Golf Club.
