Architect called out for encore

Golf course architect Clyde Johnston has been called out for a renovation at The Landings in Savannah, Ga.

Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- Golf course architect Clyde Johnston has been called out for an encore performance at The Landings in Savannah, Ga., where he has been commissioned to renovate the 6,992-yard Palmetto Course, one year after completing similar work on the community’s Plantation Course.

The Arthur Hills-designed Palmetto Course was originally built in 1985 at The Landings, one of the country’s largest master-planned golf communities. Johnstons’ renovation of Palmetto will not change the course routing, but will enhance the course aesthetics, playability and maintainability.

At Palmetto all tee complexes will be upgraded and a fifth tee added. Select bunker, drainage and clearing work is anticipated, and a new irrigation system is scheduled to be installed. Additionally, the existing asphalt cart paths will be torn out and replaced with concrete paths. Retaining walls also will be replaced. Course construction will be handled by Southeastern Golf out of Tifton, Ga.

The Landings is located on Skidaway Island, 12 miles southeast of Savannah, and bounded by the Wilmington River, the Intracoastal Waterway and Romerly Marsh.

Johnston is past-president and a two-time board member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Clyde Johnston Designs (www.clydejohnston.com) was established in 1987 and is headquartered on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
