Wind provides the energy needed to cool greens during the summer months. As long as wind speed is above 4 mph, the turfgrass canopy will cool itself to ambient air temperature and sometimes lower. This video demonstrates the impact of wind on canopy temperature using a portable fan an infrared thermometer, and a bead thermocouple and stresses the need for good natural air movement or supplemental fans to maintain cool season grasses during the summer when air temperatures exceed 90 - 95 F (32 - 35 C).
