TRAVELS WITH TERRY

Globetrotting consulting agronomist Terry Buchen visits many golf courses annually with his digital camera in hand. He shares helpful ideas relating to maintenance equipment from the golf course superintendents he visits — as well as a few ideas of his own — with timely photos and captions that explore the changing world of golf course management.

Topdresser Step Platform

The step platform was mounted on a Toro ProPass 200 Topdresser, mounted on a Toro Workman, the full 5-foot length of the implement so shorter employees could level the sand with a shovel. The framework is 1½-inch by 1½-inch square tubing using diamond pattern “extended metal” 1-foot wide and 5-foot long welded to the framework and bolted to the topdresser with OEM brackets, where the step uses 1-inch by 1-inch square tubing. Toro 361-10 New Red Touch-Up Spray Paint was applied as the final touch. It took about four hours to build and paint. The platform cost approximately $150. Darren J. Davis, CGCS, golf course superintendent, and Guillermo Gomez, equipment manager, at the Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Florida, have fun being creative. Davis was the 82nd GCSAA president.

Bermudagrass Sprig Crimping Tool

Brad Boyd, director of agronomy at Streamsong Golf Resort in Bowling Green, Florida, is overseeing the building of the new David McLay Kidd-designed fourth 18-hole tournament-caliber course currently under construction. Certified TifEagle Bermudagrass will be sprigged on the greens and this implement will “cut-in” the sprigs into the greens mix. The implement has a recycled driving range ball picker “reel” that is attached to a recycled rotary mower handle, also using some fabricated recycled metal parts to allow it to rotate. The softer greens perimeters will also be “crimped-in” with this unique tool when necessary. The two railroad “track” pieces were welded in place for the desired extra weight to crimp the sprigs into the proper depth. There was not cost for parts and materials. It took less than an hour to build. David Clark, Rob Crisp and Rob Sicinski are Streamsong’s superintendents, while Joe Stefanick is the fleet manager. Architects include Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw (Red Course, The Chain Course and The Bucket Putting Course), Tom Doak (Blue Course), and Gil Hanse/Jim Wagner (Black Course, Gauntlet Putting Course and Roundabout Short Course).

Terry Buchen, MG, is president of Golf Agronomy International. He’s a 56-year, life member of the GCSAA. He can be reached at 757-561-7777 or terrybuchen@earthlink.net.
