Valent Professional Products announced that SureGuard Herbicide has been registered for use on dormant Bermudagrass.

SureGuard provides golf course superintendents, lawn care operators (LCOs) and turf professionals with both effective, fast-acting postemergence and season-long preemergence control of Poa annua. SureGuard also delivers consistent postemergence and long-lasting residual control of winter annual broadleaf weeds such as chickweed and henbit.

“This new SureGuard label provides superintendents and LCOs with two important benefits in a single application: excellent control of Poa annua and long residual control and rapid burndown of nearly all winter annual broadleaf weeds,” said Dr. Jason Fausey, regional field development manager for Valent Professional Products. “A SureGuard dormant turf application negates the need for separate fall postemergence and spring preemergence applications, saving valuable time and money.”

SureGuard has low water solubility and binds tightly to soil to reduce runoff concerns, meaning it will stay where it is applied and not be tracked into non-target areas. SureGuard has the flexibility to be used around overseeded ryegrass and ornamentals, and it will not delay spring Bermudagrass green-up. With a novel mode of action, SureGuard also gives superintendents and LCOs an important new tool for resistance management for Poa annua and other weeds.

“SureGuard has been registered for nine years for use on ornamental beds, gravel driveways, cracks and crevices and other use sites,” Fausey said. “The tolerance of SureGuard on turf and surrounding ornamentals is well-established through years of trial, research and commercial use, so superintendents and LCOs can be confident on what to expect.”

The ideal timing for SureGuard dormant turf applications for preemergence control is typically November and December, but Fausey says SureGuard can provide effective control even when applied in January through March. For postemergence control, SureGuard should be applied when Poa annua is young and actively growing during Bermudagrass dormancy.
