As a very busy Tuesday concluded around the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, I bumped into Carolinas GCSA President Adam Charles as we were both running off to evening events. I asked him a simple question: What’s been the thing that surprised you or impressed you most about your year with the gavel?

Adam pondered that for a minute. He didn’t say how awesome it was to travel around and represent the association, but he could have since they were everywhere this year, including Roy Williams’ office at North Carolina just a week ago. He didn’t say all the legislative gains they’ve made – though there have been plenty. He didn’t even mention that the conference and show has surpassed its pre-recession size despite the fact few events anywhere can make that claim.

Instead, he said: “I wish every member had the chance to work with our staff and see how amazing they are despite a whole year of trauma.”

It’s well known that the small but incredible staff had more than its share of tough breaks this year, including a heart attack, other serious health issues and a couple of nasty car accidents.

“We all get to spend time with them a few times a year as members, but as president this year I’ve seen them overcome some really big problems with grace and good humor,” Charles said. “It’s been pretty amazing how much they’ve just powered through some very tough times and how wonderful they are as people.”

I agree wholeheartedly with Adam. You have no idea how fortunate you are to have outstanding staff who are incredibly passionate about helping you achieve your professional goals. When you see them Wednesday, make sure to tell them “thanks” and let them know how much you appreciate their commitment. Gratitude is the most important gift you can give your team at the Carolinas GCSA headquarters.
